‘Windham is the obvious choice.’ Crispin walked with Peyton in the long portrait gallery of Dursley Hall’s main wing.

‘So you know about Aurora and Windham?’ Peyton asked casually, stopping to take in the portrait of a young Lily Ramsden, his father’s sister.

‘She told me after the episode at the horse fair.’ Crispin smiled at the portrait. ‘Do you think Aunt Lily and Eva are doing well in London?’

‘I’m certain they are, if Eva hasn’t driven her batty yet with fittings at the dressmakers. I’ve never seen a girl love fabric like Eva.’ Peyton chuckled. ‘Tessa assures me it’s quite natural though. Perhaps you’ll look in on them while you’re at St Albans? Tessa and I won’t be going up to town until May for Eva’s official début on account of the new baby.’

‘Why would I be going to St Albans? As for London, May is too soon for my tastes. I was hoping to delay an appearance until the races started in earnest.’ Even then, he’d hoped to get no closer to the Mayfair mansions than Newmarket.

Peyton gave him a quizzical glance. ‘Forgive me, I assumed you’d be going to St Albans with Aurora in a couple of weeks for the steeplechase.’

‘Why ever is she going up for that?’ Crispin didn’t bother to pretend he knew anything about it. What else had the minx elected to keep from him?

They kept moving down the line of pictures marking in paint the stamp of the Ramsdens in Cotswold history. ‘I think she means to compete from what Tessa tells me.’

‘She can’t. Only men can enter,’ Crispin shot back without thinking.

Peyton held his gaze. ‘I don’t believe that small distinction has ever stopped Aurora Calhoun in the past.’

Crispin recalled the intense workouts he’d witnessed on the big hunter, Kildare, whom only she rode. He highly doubted Aurora would let anyone else ride that horse. He was starting to see their first encounter in a new light. She’d been out practising cross country the day she’d nearly slammed into Sheikh on the Dursley Road.

They stopped again, this time in front of the portrait featuring Count Dashing. ‘Did you show her this one?’ Peyton inquired obliquely.

‘Ahem. No,’ Crispin said sharply, wondering how his brother had managed to get the conversation so far from his original intent. ‘As I was saying earlier, Windham is the most likely culprit behind the attacks.’

‘You’re most likely right,’ Peyton averred. ‘I am sure you know by now that he’d asked Aurora to be his mistress. He was distraught to say the least when Aurora jilted him. The man went a little crazy in my estimation. A distasteful business all around.’

‘That’s what bothers me,’ Crispin replied. ‘Windham doesn’t seem like a man who’d ever seek out a woman of Aurora’s background. She’s—well, to put it bluntly, she’s too wild. Not his type at all.’

Peyton faced the portrait of Count Dashing. ‘Windham likes to tame wild things. You should visit his stables some time and see how it is. I suspect the very characteristic you mentioned is the reason he was attracted to Aurora.
